About the Artist

Artist Bio | Oscar Thomas

Oscar Thomas was an internationally recognized muralist, portrait artist, and cultural visionary whose work transformed public spaces into powerful storytelling platforms. Known for his monumental scale, emotional depth, and commitment to social reflection, Thomas used art as a vehicle to educate, inspire, and preserve history. Over the course of his career, Thomas created iconic murals throughout South Florida and beyond, with works appearing in Liberty City, Historic Overtown, Little Havana, and major cultural landmarks. He gained national recognition for his portrayals of historic leaders and community narratives, and his work has been described as both spiritually grounded and socially conscious. NBC News once referred to him as the country’s leading artist of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Among his most celebrated works is Prince of Peace, a landmark mural honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., located at the corner of Northwest 62nd Street and 17th Avenue in Miami. The mural became a revered symbol of hope, justice, and nonviolent leadership, deeply embedded in the identity of the surrounding community.

Prince of Peace remains one of Thomas’s most recognizable and enduring masterpieces and is widely regarded as a cultural shrine in Liberty City. Thomas also created a significant mural at the Historic Lyric Theatre in Overtown, one of Miami’s most important cultural institutions. Inspired by the rich legacy of Black artistry, leadership, and performance that defined the theatre’s history, the mural contributed to the preservation and visual storytelling of Overtown’s cultural heritage. The work reinforced the Lyric Theatre’s role as both a historic and living space for artistic expression. In addition to his public works, Oscar Thomas was deeply committed to mentorship and education, teaching art programs for youth and operating Expressions Art Gallery in Liberty City. His legacy continues through the Oscar Thomas Foundation, which promotes creativity, education, and community development through the arts. Oscar Thomas’s murals endure as powerful reminders of history, resilience, and possibility—masterworks that live not only on walls, but within the communities they serve. [culturesho...kmiami.com], [miaminewtimes.com]
